FlexDerek Method: Letting Go to Gain Flexibility, Strength, and Healing

Publié le 7 avril 2022 à 15:45

As human beings, the values of generosity, sharing, and support must be the priorities of our lives. The entire Buddhist path is aimed at carrying out inner work in order to develop virtuous qualities—thoughts and actions rooted in kindness, compassion, and altruism—and thus to gradually, step by step, eliminate all non-virtuous qualities, such as actions and thoughts born of anger, selfishness, self-cherishing, and so on.

When Slava contacted me to ask for help, instead of setting up a donation campaign on a fundraising platform as is often done, I suggested relaunching his online classes, creating an exchange—a way of “giving and receiving”—by helping him gather a few people for a cycle of three online classes, based on donations.

Bouncing back, even in the midst of bombs and chaos

Komakha Vyacheslav is Ukrainian, living in Kiev. His students call him Slava. In 2009, he founded the FlexDerekSchool and successfully ran both online and in-person training programs. Unfortunately, the war changed everything, forcing Ukrainian citizens to defend their state and their loved ones. At the end of February, Slava and his family had to leave their city and are currently in Western Ukraine, where Slava volunteers to help his fellow citizens, living off his savings. However, these could not last forever, and so he truly wished to resume his online classes as soon as possible—both to provide for his family (his son also needs medical treatment), and to show the world that the Ukrainian people continue to stand tall and fight for victory.

Letting Go to Develop Flexibility of the Body

The FlexDerekSchool is known worldwide thanks to the unique method developed by the person recognized as the most flexible person on the planet by the Guinness World Records. This method consists of stretching and strength exercises. No sports equipment or stimulators are needed. Thanks to these classes, students have consistently developed great flexibility and suppleness while improving joint mobility. Through body control, benefits also include weight loss as well as reaching an advanced level of stretching.

Who are these sessions for?

  • Elderly people with limited physical flexibility who wish to increase their strength.

  • Individuals recovering from various types of injuries, both major and minor.

  • Yoga teachers who can benefit greatly from integrating this knowledge into their practice.

The core principle of the training is to work with a relaxed body.
It is a symbiosis of yoga, stretching, and Pilates, interwoven into one system.

Structure of the Program

  • Day 1: Introduction to the methodology and a few basic exercises.

  • Day 2: Review of the fundamental principles of the theory, followed by practical warm-up exercises.

  • Day 3: Implementation of the core exercises of the method.

Each session lasted one hour per day, over three consecutive days.

The payment was based on a donation or “conscious price.”
A conscious price allows you to practice generosity when you can, making it possible for others with fewer resources to benefit from the teachings as well. In this case, it was also an act of support for a family going through one of the most painful experiences imaginable—something none of us would ever wish upon ourselves.

Let us remember: in Buddhism, we do not wish suffering for ourselves, and therefore we do not wish suffering for others.
We wish for happiness, and therefore we wish happiness for others.
