Kalachakra means "Wheel of Time."
It is known as the highest of the Buddhist tantras, the father of all tantras. Originating in the mythical land of Shambhala, its purpose is to foster peace in the world.
The Kalachakra system offers profound methods for transforming impure perceptions and experiences in order to reveal our deepest reality. In the context of Buddhist tantras and yogas, there are many systems that provide methods for attaining enlightenment, but Kalachakra presents numerous unique characteristics that make it particularly important.
The Kalachakra Tantra provides scientific theoretical knowledge such as cosmology, astrology, medicine, psychology, and philosophy.
Unlike other systems written in hidden symbolic language, the Kalachakra Tantra presents its teachings in a very clear and direct way.
But Kalachakra is not only a body of theoretical knowledge. It also provides a complete selection of yogic practices designed to cut through illusion and offer direct insight into the nature of reality. These extremely effective and powerful methods allow even non-scholarly practitioners to develop the deepest realizations within a single lifetime.
The Kalachakra Tantra was first given to Suchandra, the great Dharma King of Shambhala. Eight generations later, King Manjushri-Yashas united his kingdom by granting the Kalachakra initiation to all his subjects.
Through this massive shared experience, Yashas created a unique vajra family and became known as the first Kalki, or "bearer of the lineage." Since that time, the Kalachakra Tantra has been closely linked to cultivating peace and harmony within the mindstreams of practitioners.
For some, this results in the realization of the Kalachakra state of enlightenment. For others, it means being reborn in the pure land of Shambhala. At the very least, it creates the conditions to be reborn during the second golden age of Dharma in this world.
